Beneath the Sky
Alberta skies have fascinated me since I was a child. They arch above us, clouds and light building, transforming, and dissipating. Everything in the sky changes, even the colours. As a girl I’d lay in the coulees and look up and count the blues in the sky.
Those skies continue to inspire and exhilarate me today. I like the idea of painting ethereal things like clouds with tangible materials and methods like paint and texture. I glaze, collage, layer, and scrape with various tools and mediums to build up surface and capture the sky on the plane of the canvas. My work examines themes of awe, alienation, prayer, and personal epiphanies. By looking at what exists immediately in front of me, I attempt to grapple with the eternal. Painting helps mark my place in the world. Painting helps me share these truths.
